Innovation and renewal as a challenge
Javier Angulo. Valladolid International Film Festival Director.
After the successful last edition, both in critics and number of spectators (almost 90.000 in just eight days), it is time now, in 2016, to take advantage of the great momentum that the 60th anniversary has given to Seminci: a massive public reaction and a €10 million impact in the media which undeniably make this festival the second in Spain.
This position was confirmed last February by the Observatory of Culture in Spain, a prestigious foundation that every year conducts surveys to find the most beloved and respected cultural institutions: Seminci was in the 26th position in a list in which only San Sebastián Film Festival appears in the top 15.
Our challenge for the 61st edition, to be held from 22nd to 29th October 2016, is to show Seminci as a growing festival, continually renewing itself, with new contents and sections, and an increasing number of spectators in the cinemas (in 2015, 88.000, +10,3%).
We want this festival to remain as the Spanish reference on worldwide and national experimental film, and to keep on discovering, supporting and awarding a new generation of filmmakers from five continents, as shown in the 60th edition when Golden Spike and Silver Spike where awarded to new directors from Iceland, France and Turkey who represented their countries in the 2015 Oscar nominations.
This new edition is, therefore, an opportunity to show new audiences, especially the youngest (in 2015 more than 16.000 students from Valladolid and Castilla y León attended screenings), Seminci as a festival worth keeping track of, where the most recent films are shown: different and committed cinema, closely bound up with our society and its vicissitudes.
