The event, organised by the Seminci festival and the Caimán Cuadernos de Cine film magazine, in collaboration with the Film Academy, CIMA and ICAA, picks up from last year’s initiative
10/16/2018.- The 63rd edition of the Valladolid International Film Festival (Seminci) and the Caimán Cuadernos de Cine film magazine – backed by the Spanish Film Academy, the Spanish Association of Women Filmmakers (CIMA) and the Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute (ICAA) – welcome the 2nd Forum on Women in Spanish Cinema, an event that lends continuity to the initiative launched last year within the framework of Seminci. This second edition, to be held on Sunday 21 October, will address the presence of women in Spain’s audiovisual industry.
The first Forum on Women in Spanish Cinema celebrated at the 62nd Seminci spoke out against the lack of women in the film industry: in 2016, only 16.1% of films made in Spain were directed by women. The 63rd Seminci and the Caimán Cuadernos de Cine film magazine are repeating this call, which this year goes under the title Spain’s Female Film Producers. The event will be held on 21 October featuring representatives from 25 film and television production companies.
The forum will consist of a closed-door session from 9.30am until 1.30pm plus a round-table discussion open to the public starting at 5pm, to be attended by all women invited to the event. An exchange of views and an assessment of the conclusions reached during the working session will follow.
A preliminary background report will be used as general, initial diagnosis leading to a discussion about the situation of women in the Spanish film industry, looking at the presence of women in the area of production and some of the specific obstacles they must face.
This preliminary report, drawn up by Concha Gómez and the Caimán Cuadernos de Cine team, gathers data on Spain’s female film producers and the film budgets they handle, as well as additional information stored by CIMA and the Film Academy on this topic. The document also features several interviews with women producers. A working meeting will be followed by a presentation of the conclusions and a round table moderated by Jara Yáñez, a writer with Caimán Cuadernos de Cine.
In 2017, Seminci and Caimán Cuadernos de Cine organised the first Forum on Women in Spanish Cinema as one of the sidebars scheduled during the 62nd edition, the goal being to provide a general overview of the role of women in the industry and to propose a set of measures leading to gender equality in this area.
